Mercado Moderno
Founded in 2001, Mercado Moderno has played a key role in the global appreciation of modern Brazilian furniture, coinciding with the rediscovery of this rich 1940s-70s production after two decades of neglect.
Mercado Moderno is one of Brazil's leading design galleries, dedicated to the rediscovery and global dissemination of Brazilian modern furniture from the 1940s-70s.
What began as an arduous research effort, identifying overlooked pieces at auctions, evolved into a reference for collectors, architects and institutions worldwide. Today, the gallery bridges historical masters like Tenreiro, Zanine, Zalszupin and Sergio Rodrigues with a curated roster of contemporary Brazilian designers.
From its mansion in Lapa, Mercado Moderno continues to shape the conversation around Brazilian design.
Mercado Moderno presents its debut exhibition at Salone del Mobile Milano, bringing to the Raritas section a curated selection of rare Brazilian furniture and objects from the 1950s to the present day. The gallery, based in Rio de Janeiro, has spent over two decades preserving and promoting the legacy of Brazil's modernist masters, including Joaquim Tenreiro, Jorge Zalszupin, Giuseppe Scapinelli, Percival Lafer, and the pioneering manufacturer Forma S.A.
For Milan, Mercado Moderno pairs these historical works with pieces by contemporary artists Inês Schertel and Rodrigo Garcia, establishing a dialogue between the craftsmanship that defined mid-century Brazilian design and the voices carrying that tradition forward today.
